President Judy Clark opened
the meeting when she introduced the speakers for the evening. All trace of tea and snacks was hidden as Pat
and Rhys had brought along the Prison Sniffer dogs.
We were treated to active
searches of the hall and passive searches of volunteers picked out of a line as
well as explanations and chat from the handlers and questions from the
audience. Thanks to Jenny Jones for a very different and thoroughly
entertaining evening.
Members’ Night in April is
yet to be arranged. If anyone has any ideas could they please get in touch with
Judy Clark?
Please could members have a
search at home for any unwanted old coins to go to the EGM? These could be brought to the March meeting
along with any jumble as there will be a JUMBLE SALE AT FALFIELD VILLAGE HALL
ON SATURDAY, MARCH 29TH from 2 – 4pm.
Our March meeting features Peter Girling
from the New Bristol Botanic Gardens.

American Supper
Northavon
Youth Theatre Company
BACK TO THE 80S!
From the era that brought
the world such inventions as the Rubik Cube, Max Headroom and the Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles comes this "totally awesome" musical in the
style of movies such as Back To The Future, Ferris Bueller's
Day Off, The Karate Kid and The Wedding Singer.
BACK TO THE 80s! is brought to you by the 60
young people who make up the Northavon Youth Theatre Company, now in its 32nd
year of bringing high quality youth productions to Thornbury and its impressive
list of theatrical awards, plus no less than 40 successful productions to its
credit, means that seats will once again be at a premium. The production runs from Tuesday 18 until
Saturday 22 March, with evening performances at 7.30 pm [Tuesday to Thursday
and Saturday], plus an afternoon performance on Good Friday at 3.00 pm and, in
response to public demand, a Saturday Matinée ~
'curtain up' at 2.30 pm.
The show takes audiences on
a nostalgic trip, or a voyage of discovery, as we meet Corey, a typical
American high school student, who is madly in love with Tiffany ~ one of the
coolest girls around! She, however, only
has eyes for Michael Feldman, the hottest guy in the school; athletic,
good-looking and with a heart of stone!
We follow all the students, such as Laura and Debbie [two total
eccentrics], twins Mel and Kim, Feargal McFerrin III
[a best friend of Bill Gates] Alf and Kirk [the 'good guys'], plus Michael's
gang: Huey, Lionel and Billy, through their 'rites of passage', while, in
another twist to the plot, we follow two young teachers through a love affair
that encounters problems, but younger wisdom prevails!
The real 'stars' of this
show are the amazing songs, such as Material Girl, Total Eclipse Of The Heart,
Footloose, Man In The Mirror, The Final Countdown, Walking On Sunshine, Video
Killed The Radio Star and I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles),
plus the unforgettable I've Had The time Of My Life. This is a small selection from the score
which pays tribute to Lionel Ritchie, Michael Jackson, Dexy's
Midnight Runners, Cyndi Lauper and even the Buggles and will be in the capable hands of a 9-piece band.
NYTC promises a Star Wars
sequence, high-energy dance routines, copious amounts of blue eye-shadow, plus
20 cans of hairspray and a musical that will delight and amuse all ages. With special party rates and Family Tickets
available on Good Friday & Saturday Matinée,
demand for seats will be high, so to avoid disappointment, either ring 01454
418866, call into our Box Office at Wildings, Thornbury High Street from 19
March, or post your booking to: NYTC, 3a
Horseshoe Lane, Thornbury, South Glos BS35 2AZ.
May the force
be with you!

“One
of the finest voices in its field” – Q Magazine
At 7.30 pm on March 15th at the United
Reformed Church in Thornbury, Johnny Coppin, the renowned singer-songwriter
from Gloucestershire who was a regular performer at Thornbury Arts Festival in
the 90s and is one of ACT’s loyal supporters, will headline at a Folk Concert
organised to raise funds for ACT – Arts and Community in Thornbury. Formerly with the folk-rock band Decameron his many solo albums include Forest
& Vale and High Blue Hill and Edge of Day – a
collaboration with world –famous writer Laurie Lee. He has supported Gerry Rafferty, Jasper Carrott and The Albion Band on tour and toured extensively
with his own show all over the world. He
will be joined by the multi talented fiddle player Paul Burgess and local folk
musicians Peter and Irene McGillan and Jenny and
Adrian Dennis– a wonderful opportunity to hear folk music at its very best
right here in Thornbury. Tickets (£7.50, FACTS
and Children £6.50) will be on sale at
This event is the 7th in ACT's rolling programme,
which is aimed at showing the wide range of arts activities in the area, plus
raising awareness of ACT's campaign to build a performance and arts centre in
Thornbury.
FACTS and
FIGURES!
When is a fact not a fact? Answer: when it is a FACT ~
a Friend of ACT! Arts and Community in
Thornbury is a thriving organisation, which has been set up as a charity and a
limited company to develop plans and raise funds for a building, which will
have at its heart a fully-equipped theatre; flexible enough to provide cinema
facilities, practical arts workspaces (such as painting and pottery), drama,
dance and vocal workshops, a recording studio and multipurpose meeting rooms,
plus a café and bar.
Although it is hoped that this project will be
realised in Thornbury, it is envisaged as a focal point for not only the local
community, but for the wider area, extending up to 30 miles in all directions
and filling a void in the provision of large, multipurpose arts facilities
between Cheltenham, Bristol, Bath and Cardiff.
Amateur performing companies will be encouraged to utilise the planned
state of the art stage, workshop space and rehearsal rooms by being offered
special community rates, plus a joint marketing policy for productions which
will be followed by each group paying an agreed modest percentage of Box Office
takings to the venue. This lower revenue
will then be financially balanced by booking professional performers, such as
ballet companies, touring theatre groups, professional orchestras, modern bands
and top-name personalities, so, in effect everyone benefits and especially the
local economy, as visitors make their presence felt and the people of Thornbury
feel a welcome return to a pride in their town.
ACT needs plenty of supporters for this project, which
will be developed by the people and used for the community and practical help
for all sorts of jobs would be welcomed.
Why not become a FACT, which costs just £10 for a year's adult
membership and £15 for a couple, by contacting Ruth Piolle
on 01454 416518 or email her at ruthpiolle@tiscali.co.uk. You will receive regular newsletters and
discounts to all ACT fundraising events and there will be a special welcome for
all FACTs on Monday 10 March, when they are invited to the Stuart Room in the Chantry, Castle Street, Thornbury at 7.30 pm for a short
informative meeting, followed by cheese and wine and a chance to find out how
to become more involved with this exciting project. To learn more about Arts and Community in
Thornbury, either email to ACT.Thornbury@yahoo.co.uk or ring Chairman Philip
Darley on 01454 416291.
