Pippa's Song

The year's at the spring,

And day's at the morn;

Morning's at seven;

The hill-side's dew-pearled;

The lark's on the wing;

The snail's on the thorn;

God's in His heaven-

All's right with the world!

THORNBURY LIBRARY

1.         Frightened of your new digital camera?

Thornbury Camera Club can put your mind at rest so that you - and your camera - can enjoy your summer holidays and have the photos to prove it!

Come along to a special one off ‘beginners’ session’ at the library on Wednesday 16 April at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £5 and available in advance from the library. Numbers are limited so please book early.

All proceeds are for charity.

2.         Children’s Easter holiday activities

Animal antics!

Wednesday 9 April. This event will be FREE but ticket only to limit numbers.

Once again first come first served so please book early to avoid disappointment!

3.         Overdues and reservation notifications by e-mail

Last year it cost the library service over £12,000 to send out overdues and reservation notifications by post. Please help us to save money by providing us with your current e-mail address. This could benefit you as it’s quicker and we could also tell you about library events/new books etc. We are also looking into the feasibility of a pre-overdue which would save you money!

4.         Healthy living during the month of May!

Don’t forget our health month in May. Lots of local groups have kindly offered to take part from Salsacise dancing to a relaxing massage so please come along on most Wednesday and Saturday mornings in May when you can do more than just read about it you can actually do it!

5.         Thornbury Library Committee

The next meeting is on Wednesday 9 April at 7.30pm and you are welcome to come along at the start of the meeting to raise any issues relating to your local library. Entry is via the back door on St Mart Street.

For more information on any of the above items please give the library a ring on our new number 01454 868 006 (24 hour renewal line 08450 020 777) or visit our web-site on www.southglos.gov.uk/libraries.

Police report for the month of February

Hello, here's the police report for the month of February.

The Safer Stronger Community Group priorities for the police remain as speeding/inappropriate vehicles on the B4461 Elberton and Rockhampton. The next meeting of this group (which is open to anyone on the Severn Ward ) is 7.30pm on Wednesday 16th April 2008 at Olveston Village Hall Tockington Rd.

February saw a total of  54 calls to the police and a fall to 7 reported crimes. At the beginning of the month a caravan in Aust had gas bottles stolen from outside. Stables in Ingst were attacked again where doors were forced open and quite a bit of damage caused. The Insurance company that occupies the old services in Aust had money stolen from offices.

In the middle of the month a turn out rug was stolen from a horse in a field in Old Down and the electric fence to the field was damaged. An assault was reported in Littleton, there was also damage to a vehicle in Field Lane Littleton.

On 19th February a house in Redhill Lane Elberton was subject to a burglary. At about 4.45pm offenders used a couple of large stones to smash the glass to the door, they then climbed through forced the alarm control pad and siren off the wall then made an untidy search of all rooms and stole items such as a DVD player, Playstation and games and jewellery.

A couple of residents of Olveston tell me that they've suffered from nuisance types of incidents where large flower planters have been turned over and other similar sorts of things. I'm also going to include Olveston village and Tockington Rd when I conduct speed watch patrols after complaints at the beat surgery and from councillors.

The next beat surgeries at Olveston Stores are on 3rd April then 8th May and run from 1030 to Midday.

Company No. 6009419

Attention all music lovers!

On Thursday 17th April, Dr David Shaw, who has been the organist at St Mary’s Church in Olveston for a grand total of 25 years, will be giving an organ recital on behalf of ACT ( Arts and Community in Thornbury).  David has a very eclectic taste in music and this will be reflected in his recital, but he promises there will be something for everyone.  The programme will include music both ancient and modern, with a little of David’s well-known humour and a sprinkling of spirituals sung by the Olveston Church Choir.

The recital will start at 7.30 pm and there will be refreshments served during the interval.  Tickets at £7.50 and £6.50 (Facts) are available at Thornbury Garden Centre in the High Street or please ring either Jackie on 01454 416421 or Jenny on 01454 417038 for further information.  This event is part of ACT's rolling calendar of arts events to raise awareness of our project and should be an evening of excellent musical entertainment, not to be missed!

The second half promises to be equally exciting as it contains Thornbury Choir, TADS, concluding with a rousing sing-a-long with the much loved Concert Party.

So come and join us either at 2.30 pm or 7.30pm.  Tickets are now available from the Town Hall priced £10 raised seating/£9 on the flat with concessions of £9 raised seating/£8 flat.

OLDBURY FUN RUN 2008

Once again the 2008 Oldbury Fun Run and Walk will be held on 15th June, with the funds raised going to CLIC Sargent.  Other local causes will benefit from the proceeds of the associated activities and stalls.

The Fun Run is organised by the Oldbury Fun Run Committee in association with Thornbury Running Club and is highly enjoyable for all entrants, whether they are serious runners trying to break the longstanding course record of 18.5 minutes or toddlers enjoying a wander round with Mum and Dad.

Alongside the Fun Run, the village will again have various stalls and attractions, including a tug of war contest, a treasure hunt, a bouncy castle and many more surprises.  Put the date in your diaries to make sure you don’t miss this chance for a great day out for all the family.

Register now to save money, it will cost more on the day. For further information on the day’s events and to download a registration form, visit the fun run website at www.007funrun.com .  Alternatively registration forms are also available from: The Anchor and The Ship pubs in Oldbury and from Bonds Estate Agents, Thornbury Motors, Elite Gym and The Chantry in Thornbury.

TO ALL INTERESTED IN FOOTBALL IN OLDBURY

I hope you will know by now that the Parish Council and its Playing Field Sub-Committee have ordered an All Weather Multi Sports Surface to be installed at the Playing Field in the next few months. It will be marked out, have side boarding and goals suitable for '5-a-side football. We hope a group, team(s) or club will be formed to utilize this, and there could be an additional benefit for footballers:-

Installation of the surface will result in up to 400 tons of top soil becoming available and this could be an (and maybe the only) opportunity to do something about the present unusable football pitch at an affordable cost.

It needs a group of enthusiastic Oldbury residents interested in football to grab this chance to restore the pitch. The Playing Field Committee will support an initiative and we are sure funds can be raised from various sources to pay for excavation and drainage work.

The next Playing Field Committee Meeting is in the Pavilion on Thursday 3rd April at 7.30pm and will start with a discussion of the possibilities for the football pitch and, hopefully, formation of a group or club or committee to take it forward.

PLEASE COME TO THIS MEETING TO HAVE YOUR SAY.

WOMEN'S  WORLD  DAY  OF  PRAYER

"This was the best one yet!”

That was the thought of several after this year's service at Oldbury on March 7th.

They are always good, but this one, from Guyana, certainly had something special!

The theme was  " God's wisdom provides new understanding ", and was prepared by the Christian women of Guyana in South America. Our palm crosses and beautiful tropical flowers were  echoed by the slides which Elizabeth Vooght showed in the meditation she brought us, based on the wisdom of God in creation. The Amerindians of Guyana use the plants of the land for eating , healing and as raw materials for daily living , in ways that all nations  could learn from.
